Making a daily difference

Brandon and Daniel, who are based at the impressive 19th century Abbey Mills Pumping Station, share what they enjoy most about their time in the Ops team at Thames Water.

Daniel talks about how it’s a real mix of people from different generations and different backgrounds all coming together and getting along. He also mentions how good his work/life balance is at Thames, and the numerous opportunities for growth and development.

Brandon admits he’s here for life! Every day he arrives at work, he knows he’s making a difference to millions of people’s daily lives. He talks about the characters you meet along the way and how he’s become part of the furniture.

A sense of purpose and pride

Ryan worked in telecommunications before joining Thames Water and was looking for a career with purpose – delivering clean drinking water for all felt like the perfect fit for him and he takes a lot of pride in making that happen.

But it’s also the work that goes on behind the scenes that gives him purpose – liaising with councillors and highways authorities to do the essential work that’s needed out in the community while causing the least amount of disruption possible.

Meanwhile, Wayne and Aasim talk about what they get up to in their day-to-day work in the Ops team to ensure our customers have access to clean drinking water, and the training and support that all new starters get when they join.

A better future for our customers, communities and environment

Temi’s favourite Thames Water site is the Abbey Mills Pumping Station, more affectionately known as the ‘Cathedral of Sewage’. She explains how London’s sewage system was built in the 1800s and isn’t designed to cope and deal with our current population or its rate of growth. Enter the Super Sewer! The Thames tunnel stretches from Acton to Beckton and will help make the river cleaner and safer for people to enjoy and better for the environment, too.

Temi talks about the fulfilment she gets from a career where she is contributing to society, which is something that brings her pride and joy.

A rewarding career

Dina is the site manager at Beckton, Europe’s largest sewage treatment works, and she gets goosebumps every time she drives in. While most of us flush our toilets without a further thought of what happens to it, Dina takes pride and joy in the clever things we do with it: “We treat it, we put it back into the river cleaner than the river, and we generate electricity from it… it’s absolutely amazing!”

As Dina says, if you’re keen to learn something new… if you want to work for a company that delivers a really valuable, essential service… if you want to work in fantastic sites… if you want to solve problems and continue a legacy… come and work for Thames.
