Potential for growth
Engineers Sam and Bethan look at the breadth of opportunities available here at Thames Water and the people they get to meet through their roles: the hydrologists, the archeologists, the ecologists… and the shepherds!
Sam started at Thames on our graduate scheme and has already worked in four very different parts of the company. She loves the fact you can try completely different roles and meet such a breadth of different people.
Meanwhile, Bethan started with us as our very first Kickstarter before moving into a permanent role. She worked in the incident management and business resilience team before moving into environmental engineering. Every month, she finds out about a new role at Thames Water.
A huge variety of projects
Matt and Eve work in our Engineering & Technical function. Matt’s been here for 21 years in many different roles, including in the laboratories, HR, and now in engineering in the innovation side of the business.
Eve is also in the Innovation team, and talks about the huge variety of projects they can be working on at any one time, the numerous opportunities available and how anyone can progress and develop at Thames.
Opportunities for everyone
Graham wasn’t planning on staying at Thames Water for long, but he’s now been here for 35 years. His passion for clean drinking water shines through.
Graham has worked his way up the organisation and now oversees our entire laboratory function. He’s responsible for 120 scientists, from apprentices to PhDs, and they generate 2.7 million test results every year. He talks about how scientists come and join Thames from every single walk of life – geographers, geologists, armed forces leavers and people with no qualifications whatsoever.
His message: please don’t let age or background stop you from thinking about a laboratory career. What we’re looking for is the right attitude and passion – everything else can be taught.
